As we embark on a journey that will potentially take three years, we hope you will be educated, encouraged and energized by the spirit of our 10 year old daughter. The decision to participate in this study was hers. This groundbreaking study is a double blind oral immunotherapy research study with the intention of desensitizing children to peanuts. Fourty-five children are partipating, 15 at Arkansas Children's Hospital (ACH) and 30 at Duke University.
Two out of three participants will receive daily doses of peanut flour, with a dosage increase taking place every two weeks for eleven months. One out of three participants will receive a placebo. If Madie is in the placebo group, she will be allowed to continue in the study for the following eleven months, this time receiving the actual peanut flour dosages.
We will journal her bi-monthly trips to ACH. We have always taught Madie that she must learn to navigate life with this allergy, it is our hope that by sharing this process, family, friends and interested observers will learn and be encouraged by her strength, grace and willingness to face the unknown.
Thank you for visiting and stay tuned for updates!
